Most people probably look at stand mixers a bit like coffee cups: sure, they look different, but they all basically do the same job, right?

With these three machines, though, it’s not just about the end result, it’s about how they get there.

The KitchenAid Artisan 5KSM175PS is the premium veteran. The Bosch Series 2 MUMS2VM40G is the tech expert with enough extra tools to tackle jobs well beyond baking. And the Kenwood kMix KMX754BK is the muscle, packing a powerful 1000W motor and 5L bowl that make light work of heavier jobs like bread and pizza dough.

Our quick verdict? KitchenAid is the best choice for committed bakers, Bosch offers the most versatility, and Kenwood gives you the strongest balance of traditional stand-mixer performance and value.

Don’t read too much into wattage alone. KitchenAid’s direct-drive design means its 300W figure can’t sensibly be compared with the Bosch and Kenwood as if this were a horsepower contest.

KitchenAid Artisan: best for serious home bakers

The KitchenAid Artisan doesn’t try particularly hard to win the specifications battle.

If you’ve read our KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer Review, you’ll know it concentrates on doing the basic stand-mixer jobs extremely well.

You get planetary mixing, ten speeds, a sturdy die-cast metal body and two stainless-steel bowls: a main 4.7L bowl and a smaller 3L one. The package also includes a whisk, dough hook, paddle, flex-edge beater and pouring shield.

It’s the machine we’d choose if cakes, bread, buttercream and cookies are the priority.

There is also a huge range of optional accessories. KitchenAid advertises 15+ attachments, allowing the front hub to power extras such as pasta-making and food-preparation equipment later on.

The obvious issue is price.

You’re paying partly for the build quality, five-year guarantee, attachment ecosystem and the fact that the Artisan has been designed as something you’ll keep rather than replace in a couple of years.

Best for: frequent bakers who want a premium machine for the long term.

Skip it if: you’re mainly looking for maximum specifications per pound.

Bosch Series 2: the one that does almost everything

The Bosch Series 2 MUMS2VM40G is less glamorous, but considerably more interested in earning its keep.

At its heart is a 900W motor, 3.8L stainless-steel bowl and seven speeds plus Pulse. Bosch’s 3D planetary mixing system moves the tool through the mixture to help prevent ingredients being left around the sides of the bowl.

Then Bosch starts adding attachments.

Alongside the whisk, beater and dough hook, the product comes with a 1.25L liquidiser, mincer and citrus press, which is why it’s sold as a 7-in-1 system.

That gives it a very different appeal from the KitchenAid.

You can make bread dough in the morning, mince ingredients for burgers at lunch and make a smoothie later without needing three separate motor bases.

The trade-off?

Theres lots more bits to store.

The Bosch also has a more functional plastic-bodied design compared with the heavy metal construction of the KitchenAid and Kenwood. Its real strength is practicality rather than becoming the centrepiece of your kitchen.

Best for: anyone who wants one machine to handle baking and food preparation.

Skip it if: you simply want the nicest dedicated stand mixer.

Kenwood kMix: the value sweet spot

Then there’s the Kenwood kMix KMX754BK, which sits neatly between the other two.

Like the KitchenAid, it’s fundamentally a proper baking-focused stand mixer rather than a collection of food-preparation gadgets.

The 1000W motor works with a large 5L glass bowl, while Kenwood includes its K-Beater, stainless-steel whisk and dough hook. There is also a variable speed control and a particularly useful slow fold function for delicate mixtures.

That’s handy for things like mousses or cake mixtures where enthusiastically beating all the air back out would defeat the point.

Build quality is another strength. The kMix uses a metal body, and Kenwood offers a five-year guarantee when registered. It also has a slow-speed hub that accepts optional attachments including pasta rollers, graters and spiralizers.

And then there’s the price.

Recent Amazon UK tracking showed this exact KMX754BK at around £189, putting it well below typical KitchenAid Artisan pricing.

That makes it arguably the most interesting machine here for someone who wants a premium-feeling traditional mixer but can’t quite convince themselves that a KitchenAid is a sensible financial decision.

Best for: keen bakers wanting strong capacity and build quality for less.

Skip it if: you want Bosch-style food-processing versatility.

Which stand mixer should you buy?

If baking is becoming a serious hobby and you want something you’ll be happy to keep for years, we’d still choose the KitchenAid Artisan. Its the premium choice, and you can’t beat its timeless design.

Choose the Bosch Series 2 if the idea of buying all those separate blenders, mincers and food-preparation appliances makes you wince.

But the Kenwood kMix is probably the hardest one to argue against on value. You get a 5L bowl, metal construction, 1000W motor and proper baking tools for substantially less than the KitchenAid.

The verdict

There isn’t a bad choice here, they’re really just aimed at different people.

Best overall: KitchenAid Artisan 5KSM175PS
Best for versatility: Bosch Series 2 MUMS2VM40G
Best value: Kenwood kMix KMX754BK

If money grew on trees, we’d take the KitchenAid. If value mattered more, the Kenwood would be extremely tempting. And if we wanted one appliance to do far more than bake, Bosch takes the cake – then prepares the rest of the meal too.
